The Khutzeymateen

I recently spent some time in the Khutzeymateen, an area in northern BC that was established to protect critical grizzly bear habitat. It’s a stunning 440 square kilometer watershed with peaks that tower more than 1900 meters over the deep waters of the inlet. It’s a land of grizzly bears, humpback whales and eagles.

For all that’s wrong with our world and the way we treat our environment, it’s a reminder of what is possible if we tread lightly and provide space for nature. The world would be a better place if everyone had the opportunity to spend time in a place like this and understand both the possibilities and what we risk losing.

French author, Jules Renard, once said, “On earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.” The Khutzeymateen is one of those pieces and a testament to the possibilities.
